An area of wide open spaces, Laikipia, located north of the Aberdares and northwest of Mt. Kenya is the gateway to Kenya’s wild Northern Frontier country.  Mostly populated by large privately owned ranches, its ecology ranges from low-forested valleys to high plains.

A wonderful feature of this area is the large community ranches which have been formed from several small scale farms and grazing lands. In this way, the local communities are able to directly share in the profits arising from their ancestral land.  These ranches are an excellent way to learn about traditional cultures and how the demands of the 21st century are being met.
