The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, most noted for the dramatic Ngorongoro Crater, has much to offer. Home to an amazing variety of landscapes, it provides an opportunity to get your feet on the ground to discover first hand the phenomenal beauty of this World Heritage Site. Walk the Ngorongoro Crater rim, hike the Empaki Crater with its steep descent to a picturesque crater lake or visit the active Lengai Volcano and lovely Lake Natron. Time spent in these little visited areas will reward the more adventuresome with lasting memories. A bit of a misnomer, the Ngorongoro Crater is a caldera (a volcano that has collapsed upon itself) rather than a crater. As a volcano, Ngorongoro is said to have been even taller than Mt. Kilimanjaro so you can begin to get an idea of how large an area it encompasses. Imagine an expanse 12 miles wide.
